What is SECR?
Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR) is a UK government initiative that requires qualifying organisations to report on their energy use, carbon emissions, and energy efficiency actions as part of their annual reporting obligations.
It aims to increase transparency, drive efficiency, and help businesses move toward Net Zero.
You must comply with SECR if your business is:
A quoted company (listed on a stock exchange)
A large unquoted company or LLP (meeting at least two of the following: £36M+ turnover, £18M+ balance sheet, 250+ employees)
If you fall into one of these categories, SECR is a legal requirement.
What You Must Report
Under SECR, your organisation must include the following in your annual accounts or directors’ report:
Total energy consumption (UK and global)
Greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 1 & 2, Scope 3 where applicable)
Energy efficiency measures undertaken
Intensity metrics (e.g., emissions per £ of turnover or per m²)
Methodologies used for calculations
